Ever since the Cool Bloggers Summer Salad Challenge ended I was thinking about doing a soup challenge. I felt like fall would be a good time but wondered if it is too much. So I had decided to host one in January/February. Only to learn that Julie had the same idea and started the challenge at the more appropriate time of year. Right now. So will you join Julie and me in the Cool Bloggers Autumn Soup Challenge?
Did you know that when I started this blog I had a blog category called “Soup Sunday“? My plan was to post a new soup recipe every Sunday. I soon learned that I can’t do that intended frequency. My love for soup has not diminished. I don’t call myself a very good cook but I excel when it comes to soup. I can make most anything from scratch including homemade broth. Also you are in for a treat since some soups have been on the blog 10 years – and my photography skills have been questionable. You have been warned!
Here are some favorite soups of mine that I have already shared on the blog:
- German Potato Soup – a staple. Specially liking it after a day of baking Christmas cookies. So hearty, filling, and easy to prepare.
- Fennel Soup – so so good. I need to translate the blog post because back then I was still blogging in German (which only lasted about three months). But if your browser can translate it, cook this soup.
- Zucchini Sweet Potato Soups – it’s been a while since I made that one. To be precise I made it December 23rd last year. The tarragon is key here. I totally different taste.
- Loheikeitto – best salmon soup you’ll ever have. First eaten on our honeymoon in Finland. Another post that deserves better photos. Rich, warm filling. It’s an amazing soup.
- Udon Veggie soup – that was my go to soup in 2013 ( and my very first recipe on the blog) and it’s been a while since I did that one. Another German only post. Let me know if I should put up an updated version.
- Grandmas Herb Soup – it may not be the right time to cook this one in the northern hemisphere but maybe I find enough store bought herbs. I should also consult grandmas cookbook for more soup recipes. There are so many unique things in that cookbook. It is a gem.
- Red Beet Coconut Soup – perfect soup for grey fall weather. And it’s earthy, healthy and tasty.
Of course I also have an extensive list and Pinterest board of soups. Here are a few I want to try this season:
- Grandmas Kohlrabi Soup – I once managed to recreate it but haven’t written in down.
- Ewa’s Pickle Soup – a polish soup that tastes really great. Just last week I got the recipe. It may be more of a summer soup though.
- Lemon Rosemary White Bean Soup – doesn’t this look delicious?
- Tom Kha Gai Soup – I love that soup but have never done it myself.
- Sauerkraut Beef Soup – done it before but need to find the recipe again
- Zuppa Toscan – that one looks yummy
- Savoy Cabbage Soup – savoy cabbage is not getting much attention. I don’t think ever since my Savoy Bacon Salad I had not bough that cabbage
- Walnut Soup – never heard of that but I am intrigued even though the walnut harvest is modest this year.
- Chestnut Soup – a recipe I want to make for years. This is the year I will.
- Garlicky Spinach and Chickpea Soup – a soup from Julie which looks delicious.
- Borscht – Daria suggested a classic borscht soup and I remember having one when being in Lviv, Ukraine at my cousins wedding and it was amazing.
- Gnocchi Soup – doesn’t that sound fun? Thanks Diane for the recipe
- Green Bean Soup – I have just done this a few weeks back and I outdid myself. It was so tasty that we ate it all hence no photo, no recipe. But it should go up on the blog.
- Bread Soup – I have never had it but my grandpa talked about it non stop specially when he was getting older. I am pretty sure the recipe is somewhere in my granny’s cookbook.
Today I am going to cook the savoy cabbage soup. I found a very crisp cabbage yesterday and I am so excited to try that recipe.
What is your favorite soup? What is a heirloom recipe that is in your family for generations? Is there a soup you cannot stand under any circumstances? What’s the weirdest ingredient you ever put in a soup? Have you ever had sweet soup?

what g reat idea! I like the idea of soup, comforting but always seem to forget to make it. I want to try your sweet potato zucchini soup, looks simple and it’s vegan. will report back.
I love that soup. Don’t skip the terrain it really is the secret ingredient.
You challenge me today! I don’t like cooking at all, and made soup very few times (but was so proud that one time that I blogged it so I’m sure you’ll find it if you search for soup on my blog), haha.
But I do like the tai soup, and a few others in your list sounds yummy. I might try one, but I can’t promise anything.
I am not too fond of cooking either. But soups I like so much that I even enjoy cooking them.
I haven’t done the tai soup. I am always intimidated bulky it but it’s probably not that hard.
Let me know if you try something.
I love soup! I’m joining the challenge! I have one I’ll put on the blog tomorrow and I’ll link back to you.
Looking forward to that. Julie actually started the soup challenge I am just riding along. But in the end it doesn’t matter I just want to collect some cool soup recipes on the way.
Oh, I love this. I’m a soup fanatic come autumn and winter and make it at least once a week, with left over that I freeze. And al these, what are for me, new recipes? I’m in soup heaven!
Thank you for sharing. I’ve book marked the page to try a few of these over the coming cold months.
That is so wonderful I could give you some new suggestions.
I was planning on doing the savoy cabbage soup today but I fear I don’t have time. Tomorrow it is.
I’ve bookmarked so many I wonder if I’ll get around to trying them all.
Oh, and cabbage soup? What was it like, did it work out. One of my favourites is leek and potato soup which is so easy to make. Well, most soups are! :)
I agree soup cooking is rather easy if you’ve got down the basics than it’s more or less improvisation.
The cabbage soup was good. I’ll post the recipe soon.
Oh, these all look so good! I’m especially intrigued by the salmon soup, the fennel soup, and the sweet potato and zucchini soup. Tonight I’m making Ribollita, which is a vegetable soup that you simmer with the rind of some Parmesan cheese in it, and it has herbs de Provence. The smell of it simmering away is intoxicating.
I’ve never heard about Ribollita until I read your blog and now it’s popping up left and right. I think it’s a sign.
The salmon soup is so good but also very rich.
Oh I love a good soup! I honestly don’t start making soups until late October or so when it starts getting colder. Your German Potato Soup is very similar to mine. I don’t use all of the spices, like juniper berries, that yours, but I bet that would definitely make it more German flavored. I also don’t puree the soup, we like chunky soups. It sounds very similar to the potato soup I had last week in Leavenworth. I started making this when I was in Germany and could buy good German wieners, ours here in the states just don’t taste the same. I have tried some Kosher all beef wieners and it’s close, but somehow it just never tastes the same.
Some of my favorites that I make are Clam Chowder, Broccoli Cheese, Split Pea, Spicy White Chili, and Tomato Soup (always with a good grilled cheese sandwich).
Some of the ones I want to give a try are Italian Wedding Soup, Mexican Albondigas Soup (meatball soup), Borscht, and Minestrone to just name a few. You have some really good ones on your list that I would love to give a try as well.
I am very interested in your Clam Chowder, Broccoli Cheese, and Spicy White Chili. Feel free to share the recipes I be reading and hopefully cooking that. I do Albondegas every now and then with the husband being part Dominican but I have never heard of Albondegas soup. This may be a way to sell him on soup every now and then.
I had a grilled cheese for dinner yesterday and was discussing adding tomato soup but I was short on time and not that hungry.
There are certain recipes I think you can find in many culture and potato soup is probably one. Honestly I never use the fresh wiener in my soup but more the hot dog style. But I agree they taste a bit different. But For me it doesn’t really matter.
I like making soup once a week usually because it offers a good chance of leftovers and it is easy to make before a meeting and eat when you get home. When we were in Spain we had Galician vegetable soup quite a bit. I will see if I can rustle up some recipes and write a post.
I have never heard of Galician vegetable soup. I’d love to know what kind of soups are rotating around in your home on a regular. But it must be good. Looking forward to your post.
Not really a heirloom recipe but I do like pea soup. When I was growing up our small town had a hiking day twice a year and the volunteer fire department would make this giant pot of pea soup and you could bring your own pot and take some home for your family. I do make soup fairly regularly and pea soup is definitely on my list.
I think I only made pea soup ones – at least I have dried peas in the cupboard. But it was underwhelming at least I can’t remember. However I LOVE pea soup but I always eat the canned one. I think canned tea soup tastes just like coming form a “Gulaschkanone” and those are the best. I do’t bother trying to immediate that to be honest. Could it be healthier cooking myself – definitely.
What soup besides pea soup is on your table regularly?
What a beautiful collection of soup idea & imagery, Tobia! The soup I make most often is chicken tortilla soup. I make a huge pot and we enjoy leftovers for several days. Another favorite is waterzooï de poulet which we discovered on a trip to Belgium and all absolutely adore (and that reminds me that I should make it this winter).
Oh… I know not one of the two soups you are mentioning. Very interesting. I’ve never really been to Belgium maybe I would have discovered that soup otherwise.
I LOVE soup and we make soups a few times a week during the cooler months! Soups are so versatile, satisfying, and healthy! I am all over this! Thanks for sharing your recipes!
There isn’t much better than soup on a cold day. It’s a huge in a bowl, isn’t it?
