It has been way way way too long since I last shared a recycling quick tip. A category that has been as old as this blog is. A format where I share an easy DIY or crafting idea using materials you have lying around or scraps of previous projects. Today we are going to do some Woolen Christmas Ornaments.
This is an idea I did together with my niece and nephew during a zoom call. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and my sister and her husband – both pastors – had to reorganize the entire Christmas Events (remember that? churches were closed, no singing, no meeting, no nativity plays…) with in 48 hours I volunteered to entertain the kids over zoom so they could make calls and such. It has somewhat become a tradition and every year I invite them for a zoom craft session. I pick an easy DIY we can do and then we spend some time crafting together and chatting away.
These woolen Christmas tree ornaments were done in 2021 I think. Maybe 2022. Here is what you need:
- old cardboard – from delivery packaging
- wool scraps or an old unripped sweater – thicker wool is easier to work with
- glue
- scissors
How to make Woolen Christmas Ornaments
First off you draw a small Christmas tree on your cardboard. Do a simple triangle with a tiny stem. Every other form doesn’t really work. You can go as big or small as you like. The smaller the tougher. I suggest looking at your wool to determine the size. Otherwise you are going to be busy wrapping.
Next up you get your wool. Make a loop and glue it on the top. The end of one end will be covered and the other will be wrapped. So don’t cut anything.
Now start wrapping your wool from the top down. I suggest only putting glue on one side of your cardboard in order to not get glue all over yourself. I have usually done only the sides and maybe a little down the middle. You only need to make your wool stay in place. It can still be loose enough to move a little. Sometimes it helps to push the rounds up a bit in order to make it tighter and see the least amount of cardboard.
When you re done try to move the end under the last wrap around for a more clean look.
And voila you have done your first little woolen Christmas ornament. Now go ahead and make the whole rainbow. Or add decorations to them with beads and glitter and what not. I prefer mine minimal.
These little trees have been attached to my Christmas cards a few years back. Who received one?
Have you ever done some DIY Christmas ornaments? What’s your favorite Christmas shape (Star, tree, bell, boot)? What’s your favorite material to recycle? Anything you cannot through away because you could use it? What is your favorite Christmas ornament on your tree?
Edit: How wonderful this post goes up while we great the first snow flurries of the season. My favorite season is here.

These are SO CUTE! And, even I could do it and I’m not crafty. Maybe I’ll see if I can talk my daughter into doing this craft project with me.
I would love to see your version of my little Christmas trees. It’s easy enough and they are so cute.
FINALLY! Haha, some NaBloPoMo crafting, thank you. I like this idea and especially the idea of crafting with “your” kids over zoom, it sound lovely! I’m pinning this to my Pinterest board for Christmas/Winter ideas for sure. :-)
Have you ever done some DIY Christmas ornaments? When I was a kid, for sure, but since then lots of cards and other crafts documented on the blog
What’s your favorite Christmas shape (Star, tree, bell, boot)? Hmm… not sure but lately I’ve been very much a fan of star patterns.
What’s your favorite material to recycle? Felted wool.
Anything you cannot throw away because you could use it? Too many things, see my previous blog post on being such a material hoarder. It haaaas potential!!!
What is your favorite Christmas ornament on your tree? I’m a fan of simple so I must admit it’s the lights, and I love a tree that almost lights up a dark room. it’s so dark every afternoon here that it cheers me up.
I was planning and much more crafting posts but I am not getting them written. Sorry.
At least this one went online.
I love stars. Back in the day I did a star advent calendar and shared a star DIY for 24 days.
I love them!!!! So easy and so lovely.
They are easy. I think my niece and nephew were around five and seven and we did them
These are lovely, Tobia! What a great idea to attach them to your Christmas cards. I’m sure everyone who received a card from you was delighted.
I hope they were. I sent them to a bunch of elderly people in elderly care who don’t have anyone more. I hope those little trees made them smile.and I think San also received one.
I love it. It’s a perfect project for everyone at any age, but especially children. I love that you attached it to your Christmas card. It makes it all that more special.
It’s definitely a craft everyone can do and you can individualize it when you add beats and rhinestones and tassels.
That’s such a great idea! Quick and easy. I think I probably even have all the material already, supposing that I’m not picky about the type of glue.
I think liquid glue would work a little better but may be a bit messier. In the end just give it a try. I’d love to see your version.
Those are really cute; what a great idea. My Mom and of course me when I was a kid, always made Christmas ornaments and we still have a lot (most!) of them now, 40 years later. It is so fun to put them up each year, and I am sure everyone will love having one of yours!
What a lovely memory. I used to craft a lot with my mom too, but we made straw stars and a lot of Fröbel stars.
So cute Tobia! I can never throw anything away and I do love craft supplies in all shapes and sizes (aka keep everything and still go to the craft store and get more). Do I have to pick a favorite material? I really like them all. My favorite CHristmas shape is a star but my favorite tree ornament is a bell. I have quite a few Hutschreuther bells – I think they just have the prettiest images – so beautiful.
That’s interesting that you prefer bills on your tree but stars are your favorite shape. I love stars and I have a lot of them on my tree. But I do have three silver bells which I lost for many years and just found again last year I have to Hutschreither Bell is.
These are so cute. I went looking for yarn yesterday (didn’t manage to find a good colour yet, but will continue hunting)! Love the idea of attaching them to a simple card – a fun embellishment that can be hung on a Christmas tree for years to come.
Fingers crossed you find something you can use. I’d love to see your version of it.
I love these! :)
They are cute for sure.
These are so cute, and so easy. When we moved, I had to get rid of stuff I’d been keeping for craft projects. Now I don’t have anything, except ribbons off gifts and gift bags that we reuses. The girls and I currently have a bag that’s gone back and forth for birthdays a few times. I used to do more Christmas crafts when the kids were younger.
Moving can really make you annoyed with stuff that you then get rid of everything. I know the feeling. And even though you didn’t use it before once you trashed it you start wonder if you should’ve kept it.
