I have dived into a decade of old posts to come up with a blog treasure. An old post that was originally posted in February. I have had a very hard time deciding because apparently I have posted some really good things in Februaries. In the end I decided to share the recap of my honeymoon at the arctic circle since it is only fitting you reading about it while we are on our anniversary trip.
This trip was actually the wedding gift from my parents. And I couldn’t be happier my mom decided to do it and pushed through. Otherwise I don’t think we would have ever taken this adventure..
But let me set the mood a bit.
A week prior to our wedding we had no idea what we were going to do. It was just not a priority since we first had to get everything organized for the wedding. We had taken some days off after the wedding. But we were more or less winging it. We had the option to just stay in the hotel we were getting married in for another week. We had booked four more nights I think until Thursday (the ceremony was on Saturday) I think about a week prior my sister texted me and told me to not book anything. So I had some sort of inkling something was being planned but I really didn’t have much brain space to understand what that was meaning and I was kinda glad that decisions weren’t needed to be made.
When my parents handed over the gift – right after we watched a video with greetings from the DR – we were a little hesitant what that means. Departure was Wednesday. Did they really just book us flights and hotels to Finland? Including ice hotel nights? In comfortable -5°C? With an introductory course from the tourist info in order to know how to handle the cold of Finlands arctic? I was cautiously excited. The husband I think needed a bit more time. He likes to be in control specially during vacations.
Unfortunately, I have gotten sick and didn’t feel all too well after the wedding. On Monday before we departed back to Berlin we hit the pharmacy on stocked up on anything we could get our hands on. I even gotten prescription free antibiotics. I felt sick all through our honeymoon and I checked of every side effect of the antibiotics. Honestly I felt miserable but we made the best of it. I would have loved to go cross country skiing in Finland but I was not in the physical condition to do so. This may be the reason why we always said we would come back and have another go at this place.
But read for yourself. We did do some great adventures like a husky tour and a reindeer sledge right, snow shoe walk and a snowmobile stint.
Enjoy the read.
Have you ever been in Finland? Did you see a reindeer in real life yet? Where did you go on your honeymoon? What did your parents gift you to your wedding if you are already married?

Finland is a close neighbor so yes, I have been a couple of times mostly by boat. Seen reindeers many times in the wild.
Not sure where you’re at this time but I hope you have a wonderful time on your anniversary trip Tobia!
Reindeers in the wild a so beautiful I imagine. I’ve only seen them in semi wild while they were herded and a few roaming around I. The little village. I am sure they were not really wild.
Going to Finland by boat sounds wonderful.
The link to your original post doesn’t work for me, I tried it on 2 computers. I did a search for the post though, and I’m glad I did, what a delightful post! Your honeymoon looks magical (sorry you were sick though!) I admire you for taking that sledding class with the dogs if you are afraid of them, hyper, excited huskies would be a bit overwhelming. I loved the pictures of them though, they looked so happy. I laughed at your husband talking about a murder in the snow castle. I think I would have asked to be moved to the room with the waterbed!
My father in law paid for our honeymoon, but it wasn’t a surprise like yours was (What a FUN surprise!) We went to London, Amsterdam, and Paris. That was my first time out of the US (except just over the border from California to Mexico a couple of times), and I loved every minute of it.
Thank you for letting me know the link didn’t work. I fixed it.
Yes, being sick put a damper on it but I did as much as a could. The huskies were fun and my curiosity was stronger then my fear. And I didn’t get too close and didn’t really pet them. And once in the sledge they were in front of me. But yes, they were so excited. The sledge actually lifted of the ground before we started a few times.
In hindsight I also think we should have asked for the waterbed suite but we were young and didn’t even think of it.
So wonderful you got gifted to your first Europe trip for your honeymoon. Clearly that was a great trip.
Wow! Your honeymoon trip sounds so amazing! The thing that surprises me the most is the ice hotel! I hope your anniversary trip is going well! We went on our honeymoon to Victoria, Canada. It was a wonderful trip. We went back for our 25th anniversary, which was also wonderful. It’s a beautiful place.
Thank you Michelle. The ice hotel was fun and unexpected.
Your honeymoon in Victoria also sounds lovely. I’ve not been there but I really would like to see that place. How long have you been married now?
What a fabulous wedding gift. I would love to go to Finland at some stage and do all the Artic things. I don’t know about the cold though! My parents gave us a dining table as a wedding present, but my dad also gave us some of his Qantas points to use for our flights for our honeymoon to Broome.
Oh that is a fun gift – points.
We bought a dining table from my grandpas wedding money. We love it and are often ask where it’s from. It was one of the two pieces of furniture that were mandatory to fit in the apartment- everything else can be exchanged or tossed.
