A new year calls for new reading goals for 2024. I love to read all over the place and am always putting more books on my TBR than I will ever manage to read. It is a dilemma I tell you because all of them are interesting. But I probably can’t read much more than I did last year.
I will again compile a list of books I plan on reading in 2024 knowing already that I will not cross them all off. It is more a guiding list to remember all the great books. It is like a digital library I get to visit and then pick what is up my alley just then.
So let’s dive right in.
Tackling my physical TBR list
I have so many many books sitting on my shelves. Still. Even after attempting to read from my TBR shelf last year. So I will again put my unread books in the focus of my reading challenge.
- ✔ Anatomy & Immortality by Dana Schwarz – on my kindle TBR, already bought
- ✔ Sankofa by Chibundu Onuzo – on my kindle TBR, already bought
- ✔ To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini – on my kindle TBR, already bought
- ✔ Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel – on my kindle TBR, a freebie
- The Wise Mans Fear by Patrick Rothfuss – physical TBR, sitting on my shelf
- ✔ Cartographers by Peng Shepard – physical TBR, sitting on my shelf
- Hard Land by Benedict Wells – physical TBR, sitting on my shelf
- Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams – physical TBR, sitting on my shelf
- The girl with the Leica by Helena Janeszeck – physical TBR, sitting on my shelf
- The modern herbal dispensatory by Thomas Easley & Steven Horne – physical TBR, sitting on my shelf
Best Books of 2023 from my online and book friends
I have been adding so so many books from the best of 2023 books to my virtual TBR. So let’s make this a fun way to read those books. Here we go:
- Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister – recommended by Stephany from the Friendship Paradox and Birchie– available through my library app
- Radio Sarajevo by Tijan Sila – recommended by my friend Franzi and Jamie – available through my library app
- Maame by Jessica George – recommended by Sarah and Carole – already bought as ebook
- Tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin – recommended by Nadja and Carole
- Zauber der Stille by Florian Illies – recommended by my friend Franzi – available through my library app
- Thornhedge by T Kingfisher – recommended by Engie – available through my library app
- Spice Road by Maiya Ibrahim – recommended by Elisa – available through my library app
More books I want to read
- ✔✔ ✔At least ten books from my Read Around the World list. (Nigeria – Sankofa, Peru – Everyone knows you go home, Turkey – Without a Country, Cameron – How Beautiful We Were, Latvia – Wellen, etc.)
- ✔✔ Three books with SHAPE in the title. (Shape of Love, Be a triangle)
The list now contains 31 books. Again, my reading goal for 2024 is not necessarily reading a certain number of books. I want to read and make time for it yes. And it will show up in numbers. But I am very happy if I read 20,000 pages again. I think it should be manageable. For goodreads I will again put down 75 books.
Do you have a reading goal? Do you care about the number of books you read? Is your reading goal reading a certain number of pages daily? Do you have a book I need to read in 2024?

Hi Tobia! I’ve never set a reading goal, nor have I made TBR lists. It’s interesting to me that a lot of people do! (And totally cool!) I really appreciate people who write book reviews or give suggestions, as that’s how I often find what to read next. It looks like you have great books on your list!
I never used to do this but since 2019 I have made a list of reading goals. Or at least I didn’t officially wrote it down. I guess I had always had some sort of goal. One year it was red more classics. One year it was read the Bible. The next year it was read the Koran. Then it was read more German books. It is new though to have specific titles listed.
I also get a lot of books from reading other peoples reviews and lists. It is fun but also overwhelming. There will never be enough time to read them all.
Yay! Station Eleven and Thornhedge are such good books. You’re going to have an excellent reading year!
Thank you Engie. I am excited. Station Eleven is on my kindle since release day. Not sure why I haven’t picked it up yet.
I liked ‘Wrong Place, Wrong Time’, I hope you enjoy it. I recently finished ‘The Change’ based on your recommendation, and I really liked that one a lot too. It was wild.
I used to take part in book challenges, put on by different book groups, and they would have a badge you could put in your sidebar and so on. It was fun! But they have all stopped blogging now, that was quite a few years ago. Since then, I don’t keep track or have any reading goals. I do like reading what my blog friends are reading though, I get a lot of good ideas this way!
I want to read wrong time, wrong place but my library only has the audio book so I am hoping to find a copy somewhere. I feel it’s a book that should be read not listening too. Or would say it doesn’t matter?
How wonderful that you enjoyed The Change. It really was a wild ride. So different and so good. Kirsten Miller has a new book coming out this year where she incorporated the book band that are going on. It’s something called like lulu’ library of banned books. I bet it’s going to be good too.
Maybe we should start our own book challenge and create a badge.
I listed to Wrong Place, Wrong Time. I listen to most of my books nowadays, because I listen while I take a walk, while I cook, sometimes while I’m at the grocery store. Reading I only do before bed, so I can listen to several books in the time it takes me to read one physical book. I enjoyed listening to it. :)
Good to know. Thank you.
Three cheers for Station Eleven!!! Never had a reading list, or a reading goal. I have a wish list that is ginormous in Libby app (library) and just pick books from there. I mainly go by covers/jacket descriptions. That means that some book I do not finish.
I also have books that don’t get finished. I have so many lists of books (Amazon, Libby, goodreads, my unread shelve, etc.) I think that is why I need a reading goal as it’s too overwhelming picking from those lists…. But I didn’t have one before 2019 and who knows if I will do it for years to come. For now it’s a good thing.
Station Eleven seems to be so popular and it’s time I pick it up.
I have a very long TBR on Goodreads, but I think I only have a couple of books that I own that I haven’t read yet. I’ve put down to read 50 books which is the same as last year so probably doable. Of the books you’ve listed, I’ve read The Cartographers, Station Eleven and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and loved all three. I will have to have a little peak at the other books you plan on reading. Maybe I’ll be able to add to my ridiculously long TBR.
So good to know all three should be a hit. The books I really want to read often are longer on my TBR as I try to find the perfect time for them. Nothings more disappointing if a book I want to love and then it’s just meh.
Let me know if you find something you add to your list.
I hope you enjoy Wrong Place, Wrong Time as much as I did!
I love setting reading goals. This year, I want to read 100 books (I can usually reach this number so it doesn’t feel like a huge stretch to me) and read 6 books by Agatha Christie.
I don’t think I have ever read one Agatha Christie book. Definitely something I should change. I once had a year where my reading goal was to read classics that often get referenced in movies and books. That was a fun year.
I am looking forward reading Wrong Place, Wrong Time. Thanks for recommending.
I always set a goal to read 50 books, and always fall short. But I don’t get upset about it, and I will keep trying (this could be the year!) I get almost all my book recommendations from other bloggers, or podcasts. I have an ongoing TBR list, and there’s never a shortage of books on it!
I love your book recommendation community too. So many good books I have found through other bloggers. And yes my TBR is ever growing. There will never be a check on that one I am sure. Wishing you wonderful and exciting books in 2024.
I haven’t set any reading goals in a while (since I am still working through the Outlander Series), but I am looking forward to getting to my TBR list.
I am sure you’ll get a lot of reading done this year!
I am off to a good start – blame Covid.
I still haven’t read the outlander series. Will I ever?
